QUT Science and Engineering Emails to Planning students

I'm quite interested with the going on's at QUT. The Urban & Regional Planning degree and the Planning department had been shuffled from Built Environment faculty towards the bright suns of Science and Engineering.

To what purpose? well, I get a lot more emails from QUT about Engineering and Science related activities, nothing to do with planning. I delete them. In fact, I've set up a filter to delete them and here's how you do it. Generally words like "engineering students", "science students" are clear filter points as they are targeting those groups. Or you could set another filter to seek "planning students" which then go into another folder. It's pretty basic really. maybe the value of Planning is on shaky ground with the absorption of the old faculty, heck they took away drawing boards, drawing subjects and human scale appreciation. So they create their own filter, one that draws out the classic virtues of planning, truth and justice, and smack it down to it's bottom dollar value. Give it a rinse, see what's left, grind that and then restructure it like it's a science or engineering degree.

No wonder some people have a hard time under harsh conditions.

UDB102 Mid Semester Exam

Well, It's law for planners and so far it's been fairly straight forward going to lectures, listening, going to tutorials, listening.

It's enjoyable, funnily enough, never though I'd say that, or, maybe I say it for the fear that I have for doing exams. We'll see next week.

UDB104 Urban Development Economics

Economics is actually an interesting subject, without sounding too nerdy about saying that. Once your see how the big picture of the gfc and the use of macroeconomics to apply what's goes on.If your interested, I created a poster which can be viewed on my site at http://www.karisinkko.com

UDB472 Community Planning

It's been another good start to the second semester with Phil Heywood speaking about one of his greatest loves, Community Planning. This semester were needed to develop a plan focusing on the Gladstone area in relation to affordable housing where as I'd like to call it, sustainable housing as it's more than being affordable.

UDB475 Regional and Metropolitan Policy

Any assessment that requires you to appreciate different planning systems is definitely a good subject. What is done in one area, don't mean that the same level of understanding and assessment of developing areas is going to over the same expected outcomes.

We'll see how it develops over time.

UDB473 Take Home Exam

It's been a while since I've had time to blog, mainly because I've been under the gun of a take home exam for the last two weeks. If you don't know what that is, it's a real pain in the ass as you have effectively two weeks to write up the perfect exam responses with the world as your resource. Exactly, a pain.

It comprised of two questions, one as open ended as the other. Well, the first one was more directional as it spoke about Teleological and Deontological approaches to Planning. The second is how does planning relate to theory.

Simple huh.
